Menkake Gyouretsu ( Menkake Parade) ( Kamakura )

Overview

Menkake Gyouretsu is a parade which is taken place in the Reisai, the most important festival of a year, of Goryou Shrine at Kamakura.

A group of men are given roles and wear a mask of each one of them, such as Kami(God in Shintou), Old man, Oni( ogre, or trolls in Japanese folklore), will lead the parade.

History

Menkake Gyouretsu is believed to be started in 1187, when Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine invited a person to introduced it to add to the Reisai along with Yabusame, which is a type of mounted archery in traditional Japanese archery, following the Shishimizu Hachimangu shrine in Kyoto.
