Tsuwano Gion Festival (Heron Dance Ritual ) ( Shimane )

Overview

Sagimai, heron dance, is a ritual of the Gion Festival of the Tsuwano Yasaka Shrine. It is performed by men who dressed in a costume of Heron.

In addition,  Small heron dance performed by elementary school girls takes place.

History

Heron dance ritual is believed to be brought to Tsuwano in 1542. And In 1643,  dancers had been sent to Kyoto to learn the dance.

Since then, Heron dance has been handed down from generations to generations in Tsuwano despite the fact that the original dance in Kyoto has been nearly disappeared.
