The Spirit Boat Procession (Shōrō nagashi) ( Nagasaki )

Overview

The Spirit Boat Procession (Shōrō nagashi) is an event held at various places in Nagasaki as a part of the Bon Festival, a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors typically on 15th of August.

People float boats which are said to be carrying the spirits of the deceased down the river.

History

There are various theories as to the festival’s origin. Though Shōrō nagashi is basically a Japanese Bon Festival, you can see strong influences of Chinese culture such as firecrackers due to the nature of Nagasaki which had been opened to the world as one of the gateways to the world during Edo period.
