Nagasaki Kunchi, or simply called Kunchi means”festival”, is held to dedicate to Suwa Shrine of Nagasaki, in order to celebrate good harvests in autumn.
The festival reflects Nagasaki’s unique history as the trading post notable for being the single place of direct trade and exchange between Japan and the outside world during the Edo period.
Nagasaki Kunchi is believed to be started as a celebration of autumn harvests in the late 16th century and became a shrine festival when Suwa Shrine was founded in 1642.
