Shinjo Matsuri, Shinjo Festival, is one of the most popular summer festivals in Tohoku region.
This festival is particularly famous for the parade of gorgeous and colorful festival floats known as “Yatai” and the sound of traditional festival music play by taiko drums and flutes.
Shinjo Matsuri has been certified as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
Shinjo Matsuri is believed to be started in 1756 by Tozawa Masanobu (1720–1756), the lord of Shinjo clan, to cheer up people in Shinjo who had been suffered by the poor harvest in the previous year.
