Overview
Sentou-Kuyou, ” Memorial service of thousand lanterns”, is the ceremony of Adashino Nenbutsu-Ji Temple which is a Buddhist temple in Ukyo-Ku, Kyoto.
It is dedicated to the spirits of the dead, about ten thousand stone statues are lit up with candles.

History
Nenbutsuji was founded in 811. The temple sits in the area where people abandoned the bodies of the dead, exposing them to the wind and rain during the Heian period from 794 to 1185.
There are some eight thousand Buddhist statuettes, which had been scattered around Adashino then collected about 1903, memorialize the souls of the dead.
