Kajiki Kumo Gassen is a spider-fighting event with a history of over 400 years. In addition to the fighting, there is also a contest for the best spider in terms of color and beauty.
Shimazu Yoshihiro (August 21, 1535 – August 30, 1619), who greatly contributed to the unification of Kyūshū island as the seventeenth head of the Shimazu clan, is recognized as a founder of Kajiki Kumo Gassen.
When Shimazu Yoshihiro was dispatched to Korean peninsula by Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98), it is said that he came up the idea of Kumo Gassen in order to entertain his soldiers.
