Overview
Niihama Taiko Festival is an autumn festival to celebrate good harvests. This energetic and powerful festival is also known as Otoko Matsuri, Men’s festival, in which only men are allowed to participate.
The biggest attraction of the festival is probably ” Kakikurabe.” Groups of men who representing each district of Niihama and known as “kakifu” compete with their power and skill for lifting their own Taiko-dai of which weight is 3 tons.

Although the origin of the festival is yet uncertain, it’s confirmed that the festival has existed since Heian period (794 to 1185).
